RED LACQUERED CHINESE CHAIRS

Chairs with undulating arms made at the end of the 19th century from Asian elm wood lacquered in coral red over a previous burgundy lacquer, which shows through in the lower parts of their legs. They come from Shantou prefecture, in the north of Guandong province, showing Western influences in the craftsmanship of the backrest and crossbars, a consequence of its proximity to Hong Kong. They are in surprisingly good condition.
